Life-threatening hematologic disorders demand urgent attention from specialized hematologists. However, the absence of these experts in many hospitals, especially in rural and “underserved” urban facilities, poses a significant challenge to timely care. As a result, patients with a serious hematology condition may experience delays in diagnosis and treatment, an avoidable transfer, longer hospital stays, and, potentially suboptimal clinical outcomes. Fortunately, integrating TeleHematology services has proven to be a viable solution, reducing the risks patients face when there is no immediate access to an onsite hematologist.
AmplifyMD’s TeleHematology service gives hospitals a sustainable alternative to recruiting and employing an onsite Hematologist or Hem/Onc specialist. With virtual specialty care, even the most remote hospital can provide patients with same-day consults and weekend hematology coverage.
A recent abstract published in The American Society of Hematology (ASH) magazine Blood highlights the impact our TeleHematology programs have made on four hospitals, including a critical access hospital (CAH), a rural community hospital, and two underserved urban hospitals. The programs, which leverage AmplifyMD’s virtual care technology and expert board-certified hematologists, have helped thousands of patients receive evaluations and necessary treatment.
Several patients with life-threatening hematology or heme-malignancy conditions were identified, including 34 with acute life-threatening Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), 23 with Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia (HIT,) 5 with life-threatening high blood counts due to myeloproliferative disorder or newly diagnosed chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), 2 with Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP), and 2 with atypical Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).
